An Introduction to Me

Hello! I am Tituba. I am a slave of the Parris family. I have lived with the onorable Reverend Parris (who I love and fear as I do the Holy Father) for ten and six years. First we met in Barbados. I was taken to Barbados from my homeland in the South, where we do not have cold winters like in Massachusetts. My people are the Arawak, who are also very different from the people like in Massachusetts, and also different from the tareble Indians who kill and rob and torment us here, but sometimes white people here think I am the same as them. But I do not blame them because they are god-fearing Christians and I am a god-fearing Christian and do love all my fellow neighbors. And they are my only neighbors now, for as I say I was taken from my people the Arawak when I was just a young girl (I do not know how old) and taken to Barbados as a slave. After a short time, Reverend Parris became my master, and I now know that this year was 1673. This was a hard time, because sugar farming is hard work, but it is also a happy time for me because I met my husband John. I love him also very much and am happy to serve him as well as Reverend Parris.
Sometime close to the year 1680 we three of us moved to Massachusetts, and now we are just arriving in Salem, our new home. I think we will have a new life here, so I am starting this diary so that one day my children (if I have them, God-willing) can look back and see that there ancestor was a god-fearing woman.
